3. Definitions

With reference to this International Standard the following definitions:

3.1

auditor

person with the competence to audit [ISO 9000:2000, 3.9.9]

3.2

continuous improvement

iterative process of improving the environmental management system (3.8) in order to improve overall environmental performance (3.10) in accordance with environmental policy (3.11), organization (3.16)

NOTE: This process does not necessarily occur simultaneously in all spheres of activity.

corrective action

action taken to eliminate the cause of the discrepancy (3.15)

3.4 document

information and its support

NOTE 1: The medium can be paper, magnetic, electronic or optical computer disc, photograph or master sample, or a combination thereof.

3.5

environment

external environment, in which an organization (3.16), including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interaction

NOTE: In this context, the external environment extends from the environment within the organization (3.16) and to the global score system.

3.6

environmental aspect

element of the organization (3.16), its products or services that can interact with the environment (3.5)

NOTE: A significant environmental aspect is an aspect that has or may have su substantially impact on the environment (3.7).

impact on the environment

any negative or positive change in the environment (3.5), wholly or partially resulting from environmental aspects (3.6) of the organization (3.16)

3.8

Environmental Management System

EMS

part of an overall management system in an organization (3.16) is used to develop and implement its environmental policy (3.11) and manage the impact on the environment (3.6)

NOTE 1: The management system is a set of interrelated elements used to develop policies and objectives and to achieve their goals.

NOTE 2: The management system includes organizational structure, planning, responsibilities, practices, procedures (3.19), processes and resources.

use of processes, established practices, procedures, materials, products, services or energy that avoid, reduce, or control (separately or in combination) appeared collisions, emission or discharge of any type of pollutant or waste in order to reduce negative impacts on the environment ( 3.7)

NOTE: Pollution prevention may include reduction or elimination of the source, process changes, product or service, resource management, replacement of material or energy source, reuse, recovery, recycling, recovery and cleanup.
