This standard specifies requirements for environmental management system in order to assist organizations in developing and implementing its policies and targets to meet the requirements of laws, the requirements that the organization itself subscribes, and evidence of significant WHO acts on the environment. Standard applies to environmental aspects that the organization identifies as those which it can control and those for which it can influence. Standard itself does not establish specific criteria for environmental performance.

This standard is applicable to any organization that wants to:

a) develop, implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system;

b) ensure its compliance formulated its Environmental Policy;

c) demonstrate compliance with this International Standard:

1) through self-determination of compliance and self-proclamation;

2) a desire to obtain confirmation of compliance from the parties who care about
organizations such as the part of consumers;

3) a desire to obtain confirmation of its self-declaration by
outside the organization;

4) or a desire to obtain certification / registration of its system of environmental ME
nedzhmenta a foreign organization;

It is assumed that all of the requirements in this standard will be included in the environmental management system for any organization. The degree of their application will depend on factors such as environmental policy, nature of its activities, products or services, as well as the location and conditions under which it operates. In "Appendix A" of this standard contains an informative guide to the use requirements.
